19 Marketing And Advertising Reasons A Non Profit Organization Can Benefit from Publicity

There are many ways known and unknown that advertising in a paid or unpaid press release can help your nonprofit organization succeed.

 Immediate Advertising Usage and Benefits

  1. Possible Exposure – An Article will allow your organization to get your message out to your immediate area concerned specifically with your message and more widely to those not specifically concerned until they read your message or needs..
  2. Newspaper Exposure – A widely read and well respected newspaper circulation is usually in the thousands and sometimes hundred of thousands which provides beneficial exposure to many people.
  3. Guaranteed Inclusion – when you pay, you know exactly where and when the press release will be released into the newspaper.
  4. Competitive Advertising - If there is competition for your cause or dollars you can be highly visible at another organizations highest visibility time.
  5. Branding - A Press Release article allows your group to differentiate, clearly establish your brand and remove yourselves from the competing group’s shadow.
  6. Membership Drive – Launch your membership campaign and get guaranteed exposure.
  7. Special Projects – do you have any that are timely. Build these into your press release to gain additional awareness.
  8. Newsletter Announcement – this is perfect timing to announce your organizations brand new or upcoming scheduled newsletter. Advance publicity never hurts.

Near Term Advertising Usage and Benefits

  1. Special Target Market Inserts – sometimes a magazine or newspaper has special inserts that talks to your specific group’s mission. This will help you reach your targeted market with an affinity message.
  2. Special Related Inserts – sometimes your potential members are just waiting to join you from what could seem to be an unrelated cause. For example, a Go Green campaign has one mission recycle and reuse. A historical society mission is preservation and reuse. You can offer your missions message to meet their Go Green needs.
  3. Advertiser Funding – Advertising and press releases demonstrate to your potential or existing advertisers that they should partner with your organization.
  4. In-kind Services Funding – this type of exposure makes it a lot easier to ask for free and low cost services like most nonprofits do to orchestrate an event.
  5. Grants through Fund Raising – Grants for nonprofit organizations refusals in some cases are because your small nonprofit does not have a high enough profile. Advertising/ press releases like these shows that you are viable and should be funded.
  6. Volunteer Non member Support – People do respond to a call for support whether it is to show up to support your cause at a village hall, a house tour or join a parade. It helps because they remember the very visible article.

Long Term Usage and Benefits

  1. Ongoing Local Exposure - Press releases stay on the local newspapers websites for a long time in most cases. This means an additional who knows how many eyeballs will read it and your nonprofit has to do nothing to make that happen.
  2. Continued Regional Exposure - In addition, once a press release is on the newspaper web site, you get to use it to market your organization locally and benefit from the prestige of the newspapers’ name.
  3. Extended National Exposure - Press releases found half way around the world get read by someone who use to live near your cause but has moved far away. They will still support you from a far because they care.
  4. Your Organization’s Website - You get to capture a major article and use it on your website to promote your mission which gives your website more credibility with your targeted readers.
  5. Future Newspaper Reporter support – This also helps the reporter as the reporter helps you.

So can one Press Release and a small advertisement for a small fee per eyeball do all this? It can dramatically move some of the above activities forward, indirectly help some of the other efforts and for some efforts it becomes a background future support.

The answer is yes and maybe.  I have seen it happen in reality in one organization that I am President of and we use these strategies.

As a non profit, you have to use the publicity you get and exploit it properly by reusing it over and over In a timely manner.
