A lot of people enter the world of multilevel marketing with a very wrong perspective. Most of these people think that MLM is much simpler than it really is. The flashy advertisements with catchy slogans don’t help one bit. People get the impression that a multilevel marketer just sits around tinkering with the computer and earns millions of dollars at the end of the month. The truth is quite far from that.
You must understand that MLM is a business plan in which a network of people is created and this network promotes a particular product range and endeavors to build the network further. The money comes in through two different ways – through the direct sales that the people within the network make and through the commissions that they get when each new member joins the network.
Each person within the network is called as a distributor, sponsor, leader, affiliate or some other similar name. A person does well with MLM if he or she can bring in other people into the network and induce them to bring others. This brings in the commission for the leader. At the same time, each person within the network is expected to promote the product for the sale also. The machine is set and kept in motion by every MLM leader.
People who follow a particular leader are said to be in the downline of that particular leader. People who are above the leader are said to be in the upline. One thing that must be pointed out here is that the commissions are not unlimited. There is a limitation on the number of levels for which commissions are paid out. This is called as commission depth, which changes from one MLM plan to another.
What you must really know is that MLM businesses are about selling concrete products through building a network. There are some similar schemes out there that build networks but don’t have products. Actually these aren’t MLMs at all – these are pyramid schemes which are considered illegal.
To be an MLM professional, you must know that you will have to put in effort. Without being diligent about building your network – for which you will have to promote yourself through online as well as offline methods – you cannot do well here. It is people who enter this world with irrational dreams fizzle out without a murmur. But if you know that the MLM riches will come to you after a significant amount of effort, you will really see those riches.
