by Gregory Burrus on October 15, 2008

So what’s an advertorial? Well piecing together one vendors’ description of the same name - An advertorial is an advertisement designed to simulate editorial content, while at the same time offering valid information to your prospective clients.

What is the basic definition of the word advertorial? When you break the word advertorial down per Merriam Webster - Advertorial dictionary, it is a blend of advertisement and editorial as in an advertisement that imitates editorial format. It is relative old and relatively new term depending on your perspective since it has been in the Webster dictionary since 1961.

On the advertisement side, we all glaze over when we read them and or we immediately have a natural sense of distrust till proven true feelings on any advertisement. An example is why some folks make a fortune on Google Adsense and most make nothing. The reason being those who make a lot spend days and days making sure the ads look like anything except an ad.

On the editorial side, we know that it is a true fact that people give more credibility to editorial content than to paid advertisements. We give editorial content much more credibility because it is implied that the source, the newspaper, the magazine or the editor has endorsed your product or service. If it is a respected publication, then the endorsement carries even more credibility in the eye of the reader.

How popular are advertorials? With the growing popularity of the Web today, the popularity of advertorials can only increase even more. It is predicted that advertorials would have been a multi-billion dollar business in 2006 and going forward.

What are the benefits of advertorials? Well we all know the growing popularity of the Web today is never ending. All of us are being inundated with advertisements, but education and valid news are becoming more and more critical to the overall success of your business. With a truly valid and believable advert, you can distinguish your company from your competition, with a powerful message. Marketing experts and sales professionals all agree that your ad message is everything, and the way it communicates your marketing message can often spell the difference between success and failure.

Can you write your own advertorial? The answer is you absolutely can. Now that you know the background and definition from above, you should feel you can write your advertisement. Start by using a repurposing strategy, first outline your product benefits as an advertisement. Second find a good editorial in the same field to get a feel for how people of that industry convey information. Finally reshape your advertisement to reflect the manner, tone and content of a good editorial.

Just remember, that like a good press release, you must supply valid content or people will not believe it and you have wasted your time.
